Bunions (Hallux Valgus)

Bunions (Hallux Valgus)

Bunions are bony bumps that are formed at the base of the big toe causing foot pain and in severe cases limitations in movement. Over time as the bunion progresses the tip of the big toe will move closer to the smaller toes resulting in a further pain and functional loss especially when walking. The skin over the area of the bunion can often become red and sore which can lead to further issues.

Common Causes

The exact cause of bunions is disputed between professionals but some things that can increase the risk of a bunion forming are:

  • High heels which force the toes into the front of your shoes
  • Narrow footwear especially around the toe area
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inherited foot issues

                              Common Signs & Symptoms

                              • Swelling or redness around the big toe joint
                              • Actual deformity of the big toe
                              • Corns or calluses between the big toe and the 2nd toe
                              • Reduced movement of the big toe

                                                          Condition Management

                                                          • If you believe you have a bunion seek out a podiatrist to assess the best treatment options for you to avoid the issue worsening
                                                          • Changing shoes that have wider room for your feet may help with pain
                                                          • Padding or specialists supports may help to provide pain relief or help to improve the gap between the big toe and little toes
                                                          • Surgery may be used as a last resort and is the only way to fully correct a bunion properly if you have frequent pain and it is interfering with daily activities such as walking
